Brentford FC 0- 1 Chelsea FC

Brentford nearly scored an outrageous overhead kick in added time as Edouard Mendy was the hero to deny Christian Nørgaard. The Bees fought valiantly against the European Champions at home with Mendy keeping them in the game in the final minutes. Chelsea went away with the win and Brentford were unlucky to fall to the defeat. The Blues went top of the table and Thomas Tuchel’s men may feel quietly confident about a title fight this season.

West London was divided as Chelsea and Brentford battled. The derby had been postponed for 74 years as Brentford languished in the Championship but since their promotion they’ve been on the up. The Bees have astounded their opposition so far, their last result was an entertaining 3-3 draw to Liverpool. Chelsea had to be on their guard.

Romelu Lukaku scored at the back post following a pass from Timo Werner but the Belgian couldn’t celebrate for long as he was offside. Both teams were unable to break each other down in the first half. Ben Chilwell linked up with Werner as the German fired over the bar in the 37th minute. Chelsea struggled to capitalise on their opportunities but on half time Chilwell blasted a shot home.

Ivan Toney was guilty of trying to be too clever with his chance before Romelu Lukaku skied his effort at the other end. The Belgian’s blushes were spared as he was declared offside regardless. Brentford hit the post not long after as the shot was slightly wide. The game was livening up. The Bees could have had a penalty for contact on Toney however this was denied as the striker couldn’t beat the offside trap.

Edouard Mendy made an excellent save to deny Brentford an equaliser as Trevoh Chalobah tracked back to make a crucial goal line clearance. Brentford remained seventh in the table following this result.
